Nocturnal Animals online movie review - An extraordinary experience!
With a fantastic cast and trailer, I was pretty interested and curious in seeing how this film would play out. However I had no idea what I was letting myself in to with this amazing masterpiece of a film that has truly blown me away.
Firstly the director Tom Ford, who did a truly amazing job with the directing in this film. The camera work and shots in this film are new, interesting, different and a breath of fresh air. From a "part time" film maker this is extraordinary work and something that should be championed, what a fantastic talent this man is. The shots varied straight from the opening of the film from shocking visuals and images to more simplistic backgrounds that we all take for granted in our day to day lives. The combination of striking and simplistic works so perfectly in this film and is a testament to Tom Ford and introduces us to his style.
Next the cinematography by Seamus McGarvey, is absolutely some of the best work I've seen in a film for quite some time. Every shot in this film has been carefully thought out and work to perfection, it really shows through onto the screen. Every single element on the screen is there for a reason and there is never a moment when colours or lighting don't fit the location or the specific part of the story and character. It can go from vibrant background and colours of the city and houses to the rough and gritty desert of the book, it deserves award nominations.
Next the screenplay which once again Tom Ford excels at, this film has three stories in one but you never get mixed up in any of them. This story is different, new, intriguing, edge of the seat and a mix of emotions. All these play of one another perfectly in the film and makes it a fascinating watch through the run time. Another new idea, for me anyway, that this story and screenplay convey are questions for the audience but no answers for them. Examples like was the ex-husband real, Was the story she was reading actually reality. This film defiantly makes you think which is so refreshing to see at the cinema rather than the film give you all the answers along the way.....Girl on the train...cough. As well as all the others I've mentioned this screenplay encompasses a range of different genres and pulls it of brilliantly. Whether it be romance, drama, thriller, mystery or action this film gives each of these aspects the correct amount of time and makes the film ever changing. The ending to this indelible screenplay and story is fantastic as well, reminds me of the first time I saw Inception. However I feel that this film brings up more questions, the fact that we will never know if would have turned up to met her and the end. Again brings up the question of whether he was fantasy and the story in the book was reality. Through his directing and the screenplay Tom Ford has shown the way to others how an truly extraordinary experience can take place on the big screen through a thought out film. Other film makers should strive to reach this level and in some ways this film is embarrassing for other directors to watch because this is Tom Ford's SECOND film. Some directors in the their whole career as a film maker will never reach this level which is a real eye opener. I firmly believe that this film has made a bridge for the audience between ordinary films and more independent, creative and different films from directors such as Stanley Kubrick and Terrence Malick.
Now onto the cast and the performance of this film, amazing. Everyone Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are all fantastic in this film. The audience can have an emotional interaction with all of them, from Amy Adams character and feeling sympathy towards because of her personal life and her cheating husband. Jake Gyllenhaal's character's, yes both of them, you feel devastated for Tony and loss that he has had and what he has had to go through. But again the story brings up more questions than answers, Why didn't he fight back? Did he mean to kill himself? Also Edward as well, he was trying to do the right thing but was seen as weak but was he actually real or a fantasy of Susan's? Michael Shannon knocked it out of the park with his dark twisted portrayal of a cop coming towards the end of his career. Suffering from cancer but wanting to hold so he can finish his last case and bring the criminals to justice. The final performance was Aaron Taylor-Johnson was excellent and playing real nasty piece of work. However at the same time was funny at times, disturbing, horrible and a liar. All these qualities to the character really made you want him come to justice and for Jake Gyllenhaal"s character to get closure for horrid crime that was committed.
Finally this film has truly blown me away, I came out of the theatre genuinely speechless a film has never got to me in that way. From all the accepts of this film I have spoken about this film is a true marvel and will no doubt in my mind go down as a cult classic in years to come. This is 100% worth your time and money because other people making it put there time, money and care into it. My vocabulary doesn't have enough words in it to describe this film, but this is why we all love film and strive to be a film maker or storyteller. I've given this film a 9 but in reality it is a 9.7/10 or 97%, this film is genuinely groundbreaking, one of the best films I've ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!
